Director, Compensation Program and Portfolio Management

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and strategic leader to manage and optimize compensation portfolio and engagement strategy across the organization. Reporting to the Sr. Director, Global Compensation, this role will oversee the portfolio of Total Rewards programs, provide some project management support, enable global program management efforts, lead compensation efforts in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and develop a comprehensive knowledge management strategy. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in compensation, operational efficiency, and program management, with a passion for driving impactful results.

Key Responsibilities:

Portfolio Management:

  • Oversee the suite of Compensation programs to ensure seamless delivery, alignment with business objectives, and adherence to market competitiveness.
  • Develop a cohesive engagement strategy, ensuring that all programs and initiatives are aligned total rewards philosophy and deliver a consistent user experience.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and other key stakeholders to ensure that compensation initiatives are well-integrated and support a cohesive employee experience.
  • Drive visibility and connection across programs, ensuring alignment with broader employee lifecycle touchpoints and fostering a holistic Total Rewards strategy.
  • Regularly review global program performance, gather stakeholder feedback, and recommend enhancements to improve effectiveness and employee satisfaction.

Project Management:

  • Provide project management expertise for key, global, compensation-related initiatives, ensuring timely execution, clear deliverables, stakeholder and business objective alignment, clear success metrics established and vendor management.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and other teams to achieve project goals.
  • Play a key role in the design of global compensation programs and frameworks, including identifying partners, preparing design considerations, ensure alignment to strategy, develop effectiveness metrics, lead continuous improvement opportunities.

M&A Leadership:

  • Lead compensation approach for mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
  • Develop and implement frameworks for integrating compensation structures and policies post-M&A, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and employee experience.

Knowledge Management:

  • Develop and execute a knowledge management strategy to ensure compensation-related policies, frameworks, and best practices are documented, accessible, and regularly updated.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and sharing within the Total Rewards team.

Qualifications:

  • 12 years relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business, or related field; advanced degree or CCP certification preferred OR
  • 10 years’ experience with a master’s degree or 8 years with a PhD.
  • Proven experience in compensation management, project management, and process improvement.
  • Strong expertise in M&A compensation integration and Total Rewards program design.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in HRIS and compensation management tools.

  • Proactive and adaptable in navigating ambiguous, fast-paced environments.
  • Skilled in managing multiple priorities and delivering results under tight deadlines.


The salary range for this position is: $226,185.00 - $292,710.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
